Flamingo since 2018

The successful late bloomer

If you read the other stories in this book, he is a late bloomer. After some mini-cricket at around the age of eight, Julian did not pick up the bat again until he was fourteen. "A friend from the soccer team at HBS was playing cricket and I joined him. Since then, I have been more and more involved in cricket every year."

Then it went fast. "I think the first few years that I started playing cricket I learned a lot about the game. I noticed that I had good basic coordination and my bowling, batting and fielding were reasonable for someone who was just starting out. The moment I thought I could take cricket a bit more seriously was when I was allowed to play for Netherlands A against Jersey. From that moment it went quite quickly. And now I really want to see how far I can get."

Selection Orange

There are also highlights. "I find it difficult to determine my best performance. Things have happened that I am very proud of. Travelling thanks to cricket, something I really wanted to do from the age of 18 and which finally happened on my 24th. I am also proud to be part of the Dutch selection and hopefully I will be selected for the Dutch national team in an official T20 or ODI. That would be my best performance."

Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy

His acquaintance with The Flamingos dates back to 2018. "I was asked on the England tour at the last minute, a choice that was of course made quickly. With an incredibly good and fun team, we travelled by boat to England for a week full of high-level cricket and fun. After that week I was asked by The Flamingos if I wanted to travel to Cape Town for the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy. Again a choice that was quickly made. In Cape Town I had the best two months of my life together with Philippe Boissevain. A journey for which I am forever grateful to The Flamingos."
