Annemijn van Beuge

Flamingo since 2019

Get everything out

Annemijn van Beuge reported to the VCC at the age of seven, together with her twin brother Thomas. It was her mother (Green-Yellow) who encouraged her interest in cricket. She was developing into a true all-rounder who brought a lot of fun to her team. Annemijn: "But I wanted to go further, and that is why I wrote to De Flamingos asking them to sponsor me during my intended stay in Australia. I received an enthusiastic response, so I could travel to Perth at the end of 2019, where I was able to stay with a host family."

Job van Bunge's Cricket Academy

Annemijn was not short of cricket in Western Australia. She trained three times a week at Job van Bunge's Cricket Academy, twice a week she played at the Western Suburbs CC, a men's club, and once a week tested her strengths with a women's team. A full program. "Everything for me was aimed at sharpening my talents. As well as the intensive training program, I played a lot, including multi-day matches. I look back with pleasure on the 55 runs I once scored in a men's match and in another match; I once took five wickets. Performances to be proud of. I loved the sledding of the men, something the Aussies are notorious for. You have to be able to handle that, it makes you more mature. When it comes to bowling, I was initially a medium pacer, but Job also showed me the secrets of the off spin in Australia. "

Superover at Oranje

Cricket highlights abound during her Australian period. She includes her visits to matches of the Perth Scorchers, the most successful team in the history of the Big Bash League, with star players such as Jason Roy and Michell Marsh. The Optus Stadium, where the games are played, made a big impression. Annemijn stayed in Australia for five months. For the last two weeks, her parents joined her. They made a wonderful tour through this fascinating continent, along with cities such as Melbourne and Sydney.

Even before she went to Perth, Annemijn made her debut in the Dutch national team as an all-rounder. The super over that she had to bowl in one of the matches is still near the front of her mind. "It was exciting. I was afraid that I would get a lot of runs, but that was not too bad. It stayed with a four. Unfortunately, we didn't get much in our superover, so we still lost!"

Training and studying

In the Netherlands, Annemijn plays with club and teammate Babette de Leede and the internationally successful Sterre Kalis, from whom she still learns a lot. Cricket has enabled her to travel extensively. During training sessions of the Dutch national team, she benefits greatly from the advice of James Hilditch and Tim de Leede. Their intensive and sometimes playful approach is beginning to bear fruit. "I have to combine this with my law studies, which I started in Amsterdam in 2020. That requires a lot of traveling back and forth. Perhaps in the future a combination of training at VRA and playing at VCC will be possible. I’m not sure yet."

Particularly enabled by her stay in Australia, Annemijn has made great strides forward in cricket. But that is not enough for her. "I would like to apply for top sport status. If it were awarded, I would be able to combine sport and study in an ideal way. Then I could get even better, as my ultimate goal is to always get the most out of my possibilities."
